Week 14 - LAST LESSON

Dear students,
Today you should hand in your final paper in printed form, and show me the receipt of your submission to the university database. After you have all handed in your final paper, you will have a final exam. This test will be worth ten points.

You will have twenty minutes to summarize the information in the chart below in 150 words or more. You may not use a dictionary (but you will need to use your phone to access the blog post). Your summary will be graded using the following four criteria: task completion, cohesive devices, grammar, vocabulary.

Kind regards,
Chris Elvin

Week 13 - FINAL DRAFT

Dear students,
Today is the last chance for your teacher to see your work. Please let him check your final draft today.

When you have finished, you should upload your essay to the database via the link below:
http://www.tinyurl.com/mgow8cs

Then print your essay and bring it to class together with your receipt you received after submitting to the database. You may do this today. Otherwise you must do this by next lesson.

Kind regards,
Chris Elvin

Week 11

Dear students,

This is the deadline for your first draft, so please hand this in at the beginning of the lesson.

Today you will continue to write your academic paper. Please allow me to see your work and mark you off after completing the various stages: map/outline, thesis statement, bibliography, introduction, first draft, edits and rewrites, final draft.
If you want to bring your computer to class, please do; This might save you some time.
Spelling and grammar checker:In Microsoft Word, the spelling and grammar checker is under "Tools" on your menu bar. There is also a "Thesaurus" under "Tools", too.
Header:There are two ways to put a header on your paper. One is to manually do it after you have finished writing your paper. The other way is to access it under "View", which is also on the menu bar. In the navigation bar for "Header and Footer", you should click on the "Different First Page" checkbox.
The first page of you header should look like this:
Running head: THE SHORT TITLE OF MY PAPER
All the other pages in your paper should look like this:
THE SHORT TITLE OF MY PAPER
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Week 10

Dear students,
Today I would like to check your bibliographies. Your references don't necessarily need to be in APA format, but if they are, I can check them for you. Remember to cite trusted reliable sources rather than anything you just happen to find on the Internet; Poor sources are more likely to weaken your argument than strengthen it. In this respect, you should try to avoid writing "(n.d.)" throughout your text.
After  I have checked your bibliographies, you will do a short exercise about cohesion. After that you will continue to write and edit your final paper.
Kind regards,
Chris Elvin

Tuesday 1 November 2016

Week 9

Dear students,
Today you will look at APA formatting in more detail.

First of all, in a previous lesson, I said that the headers should be bold, 18 point and 16 point. This is only true for a specific college I teach at - it is not APA, so please ignore what I said! Everything should be 12 point Times New Roman. Secondly, "Works Cited" should be labelled "References". I am sorry for the confusion.

Here is my sample essay written to conform with APA guidelines:
Sample 1

Here is another APA formatted paper. The content of this is all about APA, so it has much good advice.
Sample 2

Here is another APA formatted research paper.
Sample 3

If you look at these three papers, you may see some similarities. This is the APA format that your paper should look like.

Good luck!
Chris Elvin

Week 8

Dear students,
Today you will take your mid-term test. While you are doing the test, your teacher would like to check your portfolio, so please make sure to bring it to class. It should include your:
1) essay about retirement
2) group comparison essay
3) in-text citation matching exercise
4) works cited matching exercise
5) group final paper (typed)
6) map or outline of your final paper
Your portfolio is worth 30 points and you should hand it in today. Late portfolios will score a maximum of only 20 points.

Today's test is worth 10 points. You will have forty minutes. You should write a minimum of 250 words.
Test question:

More and more people are eating imported food these days. What are the reasons for this, and what can be done to promote local produce?

You will not be allowed dictionaries or cell phones, and there is no need to write references. You should, however, prepare to answer the question in advance.
Kind regards,
Chris Elvin

Week 7

Dear students,
Today, I would like to check your final paper outlines and bibliographies. If your map is complete and can not be improved, and you have done all of your necessary reading, you may start writing your final paper. Please download the outline below if you wish.
Final Paper Outline
Individually, I would like to see your work at various stages. You will be marked complete at the following points:
1 map or outline and thesis statement or title
2 bibliography
3 introduction
4 first draft
5 edits and rewrites (as many as you wish)
6 final draft
You must show me your progress in order to earn credit for the course.
Kind regards,
Chris Elvin

Week 6

Dear students,
Today you will read your group essay within your group. After that, please let your teacher take a look at it. If everything is fine, you may then start preparing for your final paper. If possible, by the end of the lesson you should have chosen your topic to research and have drawn a rough outline or map. You will also need to create a bibliography and start researching soon. Remember, your final paper should be new, interesting, researched, and have a critical thinking component.
Kind regards,
Chris Elvin

Thursday 20 October 2016

Week 5

Dear students,
Today you will work in groups of four or five. You should choose a topic to write about, narrow the focus, draw a detailed map, do your reseach, and then write your part of the essay. A good thesis should be original, interesting, researched, and include critical thinking. Your group essay should be over 250 words long per person (over 1000 words) and include at least five references. Therefore your essay will have at least five APA formatted in-text citation markers together with their matching full APA formatted references in the Works Cited. All of your references should support and strengthen your thesis. A good reference is the opinion of an expert. A bad reference is something arbritary that you found on the Internet. Wikipedia is fine for this class, but the original source of the Wikipedia article (the references at the bottom of the page) may be better.

For homework, please type your part of the essay in APA format. You should use Times New Roman font. Your text should be 12-point and fully justified. Your references should be hanging indent, left justified. Everything should be double spaced.
It should look something like the file below:
My_Paper
You should include the full essay in your portfolio and highlight the parts that you wrote.
Kind regards,
Chris Elvin

Tuesday 4 October 2016

Week 4

Dear students,
Today you will read your summary of a novel that you wrote for homework. After you have finished, please show it to your teacher who will briefly check your in-text citation and Works Cited.
Please also bring a book to class today so that you can:
a) paraphrase a paragraph
b) cite a short quote
c) cite a long quote
Each of these intext citations should be in APA format, and you should also make reference to these in an APA formated Works Cited.
After that, you will study APA in more detail, so please download the files below.

You should also write what you found interesting about the book, perhaps in a new paragraph.

Week 2

Dear students,
Today you will analyze a student essay before attempting to write one of your own in groups. Please bring the academic writing student's booklet to class.

Please write at least 150 words in one or two paragraphs  (or possibly more). You should also include an APA formatted in-text citation together with its APA formatted full reference in the `Works Cited`.

Week 1

Dear students,
Do you remember the essays you wrote for IE3? Today you will write an essay and show it to your teacher.

Some people say that everyone should retire at age sixty-five, whereas others argue that this should not be the case. Discuss both points of view before concluding with your opinion.

You should first draw a map, or write an outline. Then you may begin writing your 250-word essay. You should also include at least one APA intext citation together with its full APA formatted reference in the `Works cited`. This should take about one hour to complete.

After you have finished writing, please try to estimate your score using the bandscale criteria below. Once you have done this, you may show your teacher.

January 19th lesson

Dear students,
After you have completed your final draft of your final paper, and before you come to class, please upload your essay to the plagiarism checker below:

http://www.tinyurl.com/mgow8cs

It will be searched for irregular text strings (series of words which have been written and published before), and output a confidence score. If your essay is your own, and you didn`t copy paste, you will have nothing to worry about!

The hard copy of your paper that you hand in today must be typed, and include your name, ID, date, and word count. You should also attach your outline (typed or handwritten). There should be at least seven references in your Works Cited and your essay must have intext citation markers which direct the reader to the correct reference of your Works Cited. Finally, and most importantly, your writing must be academic and interesting!

IELTS Task 1 Part B - Model Answer

Dear students,
Here is a model answer for part B of the test you took on January 12th:

Part B Model answer

The two diagrams show how electricity can be generated from the rise and fall of water caused by sea waves. The process involves a structure which is mounted on the side of a cliff or sea wall. This structure consists of a large chamber. One end is open to the sea, and the other leads into a vertical column, which is open to the atmosphere. A turbine is installed inside this column and this is used to generate the electricity in two phases. The first diagram indicates that when a wave approaches the device, water is forced into the chamber, applying pressure on the air within the column. This air escapes to atmosphere through the turbine, thereby producing electricity. The second diagram illustrates the next part of the process when wave retreats. As the water level falls, the air from outside the column is sucked back in through the turbine. As a result, electricity continues to be generated. The turbine rotates only in one direction, regardless of the direction of the air flow. In conclusion, we can see that this structure is useful as electricity is generated in both phases: entering and retreating of water.

IELTS Task 1 example

Dear students,
Here is an example of a task 1 writing task for IELTS.

The bar chart illustrates the percentage of people who hold a science qualification in Singapore and Malaysia. A prominent feature is that a significantly low percentage of people hold science qualifications, that is Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in science from university level studies in both countries. Less than 5% of people hold a qualification in science at Master’s degree level in both Singapore and Malaysia.
There is a significant difference in the percentage of people holding science qualifications at Bachelor level between the two countries; while this number is 20% in Singapore, in Malaysia it is a mere 10%. The percentage of people with school leaving exams in science is slightly higher in Malaysia than in Singapore. 35% of people in Malaysia have a science qualification at this level, whereas the number in Singapore is 5% lower. Finally, more than half the people in both countries hold no science qualification at all.
